Thank you for the 'passport' explanation
The Editor, Madam:
I have read in earnest your explanation/analysis regarding the
United States passport requirement for American citizens returning
from the Caribbean and the two-year extension offered to cruise
ship passengers vis-à-vis airline passengers, and the fact
that the law as it relates to airline travellers requiring passports
become operational in January 2007.
Contrary to the erroneous and fictitious explanation offered by
politicians and hotel magnate, Mr. Gordon Butch Stewart, that the
United States position of requiring passports to re-enter is based
on the current relationship that several Caribbean countries have
with Mr. Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, your elucidation
and clarification of this salient issue, specifically Mexico's preferential
treatment and status is extremely appreciated.
Indeed, as you appropriately contend, several governments within
the Caribbean did not respond proactively and seriously regarding
the Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative. Consequently, when the
law becomes operational, it will definitely have an impact on the
Caribbean with regard to foreign exchange earnings. Again, your
information and insight on this issue is immensely instructive.
I am, etc.,
