Gran Bahía
Principe to launch enviro project
Denise Reid, Hospitality Jamaica Writer
With its beautiful Victorian architecture, lush vegetation and
intriguing sculptures, Gran Bahía Principe has made Pear
Tree Bottom grand and fabulous, and now the hotel seeks to make
the surrounding communities equally beautiful with the Eco-Bahia
programme.
It is hoped that during this month, the hotel will launch the project,
which is aimed at environmental education and protection in response
to the specific challenges and community needs of the area.
Its sister property in Akumal, Mexico has had an ongoing project,
similar to the one being introduced here for the last eight years.
replicate project
Speaking with Hospitality Jamaica, the resort's human resource
manager, Kerone Barnett, stated, "Eco-Bahia has been working
well in Mexico and we realised that we both have some of the same
problems and they have been getting a good response, so we want
to replicate this."
The programme will focus on such areas as Jamaica's natural resources,
environmental challenges and sustainable community development.
Environmental experts behind Eco-Bahia in Mexico will visit the
island and identify projects that are of greater priority, while
Jamaicans will travel to Mexico to observe the progress of the project
there.
The Gran Bahía will be targeting neighbourhood watch organisations,
business people and schools. Both children and adults will benefit
greatly from this project as it will delve into educational programmes
in waste management, resource conservation and family health. According
to Barnett, "People will become aware of environmental risks
and will be able to deal with them."
In addition, the hotel will not only educate its staff about issues
regarding recycling and water and energy conservation, but will
also seek to implement community-driven programmes in these important
areas.
The goals of the project are protection of the environment and
natural resources, local community engagement, education and empowerment
in environmental protection.
