Contributing 37 years to nation building
Thirty seven years ago, the Montego Cooperative Credit Union Ltd.
(MCCU) began operations in the second city. Today, the financial
institution is located in the hub of the town's commercial centre;
Sam Sharpe Square, and boasts a membership of over 38,000, with
total asset of $862.6 million, loans $413.3 million and savings
of $650.1 million.
The MCCU offers a variety of products and services such as loans,
savings accounts and other financial services.
According to marketing manager, Lorna Clarke, "being a credit
union member is different." She asserts, "It is your institution
and as such you don't have to pay many fees. The interest rates
are very competitive; we made our mark with dividends of seven per
cent paid on shares in 2006."
In addition to being a great institution with which to bank, the
MCCU has made substantial contributions in and around Montego Bay
through various outreach projects in a myriad of schools and communities.
The institution has sponsored the Railway Lane Basic School. The
school, which operated from the back of a trailer, is now housed
in a concrete building.
MCCU has been a part of the MoBay Expo for over five years. Clarke
stated that the response is always great and that the credit union
uses it as an opportunity to promote products and services.
This year the credit union will offer on-spot applications which
will include 'loan direct' - which will allow customers to apply
for motor vehicle loans at the three-day event.
