HOSPITALITY FEEDBACK
Dear Madam,
SINCE THE very unfortunate accident in which Godfrey Dyer
and two members of his crew were badly burnt, there has been much
discussion in the press about the availability of international
health insurance in Jamaica.
Recently, someone wrote a letter to the editor of the Hospitality
Jamaica issue of The Gleaner on August 17, recommending rather forcefully,
that Jamaicans buy health insurance from a company.
In order to properly inform the public that legal international
insurance is available in Jamaica., I wish to note that Lawe Insurance
is the agent and distributor for Lloyd's of London.
Lloyd's provides legal international health insurance in Jamaica.
It is the only insurer of comprehensive international health insurance,
which is approved and registered with the Financial Services Commission
in Jamaica.
Clients who purchase Lloyd's policies automatically get the protection
of the Financial Services Commission, which is the 'watch dog' agency
for non-banking financial institutions in Jamaica. When the public
buys from companies not registered in Jamaica, there is no such
protection.
It is a fact that there are certain procedures and treatment options
which are done abroad which are not available in Jamaica and there
are certain procedures which are more advanced and done better abroad
than in Jamaica. This is because of more advanced technology, equipment
and research, which is available in the developed world. This kind
of coverage is, therefore, necessary and valuable, as recent events
have demonstrated. Our policies may also be used at hospitals, doctors
and treatment centres in Jamaica.
I hope that my letter will help in setting the records straight.
Yours sincerely,
A. PATRICK LAWE, President
