Our journey continues ...
On behalf of the shareholders and directors of Half Moon Bay Limited, I am delighted to take this opportunity to reflect on the historic landmarks of the 60th anniversary of the opening, in 1954, of the Half Moon Hotel & Cottage Colony, and the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Half Moon Golf Course in 1964.
In conducting our business affairs through this significant period in Jamaica's development, we have been buttressed by continuity of ownership, of management, of the loyalty of many of our staff members, and of the democratic institutions established and operated by an independent Jamaica.
Of the 17 original investors in the hotel, there remain three. Our families have been enriched by our relationship with Jamaica, and are proud and happy that we have been able to contribute to the establishment of Jamaica as one of the world's leading tourist destinations. Our management team has been led by only two chief executives in the past 50 years, and many of our employees have been with us for more than 40 years, with two serving more than 50. Many of our guests have been staying with us for so many years, that they now bring their grandchildren.
we are not trapped by or in the past
This does not mean that we are trapped by or in the past. In the first decade of this century we embarked on major reconstruction and renovation of the entire property, which culminated in the construction of one of the finest resort spas in the Caribbean, and there will be more innovations and improvements to come. Our education and training programmes ensure that our staff members are equipped to serve the modern-day needs of our guests in every aspect of their Half Moon and Jamaican experience. We are particularly happy that Half Moon continues to be an employer of choice for many hundreds of people.
As one of the early investors in Jamaica's tourism industry, we are glad to see the new hotel developments throughout the island as new investors recognise the value of Jamaica's location, stability, workforce and infrastructure. This bodes well for Jamaica and for all of us who have committed ourselves to this wonderful island.
The operation of a large resort such as Half Moon requires input from almost every industry and profession in the island, from agricultural suppliers, to experts in the very latest in technological developments. We have also drawn on the advice and support of nearly every ministry of Government. Our staff members have been the face of Half Moon and are the reason that our guests return year after year and generation after generation. I would like to recognise the contribution of our partners over all of those years, and extend a sincere 'thank you' to each and every one of you.
We have travelled a long way together, but our journey continues, and we relish the prospect.
